Sanjog Gupta, head of the live sports vertical at JioStar, is set to become the new Chief Executive Officer of the International Cricket Council (ICC), according to a report from The Guardian.Â
If confirmed, Gupta will work alongside ICC Chairman Jay Shah, former BCCI secretary, strengthening India’s influence in global cricket.
The move comes as cricket faces challenges like scheduling conflicts and India-Pakistan tensions. Gupta’s appointment would be a milestone under Shah’s leadership, which began in December 2024. Shah has pushed for Indian interests, including hosting the World Test Championship 2025-27 final.

Sanoj Gupta Likely to Team Up with Jay Shah in ICC’s Top Roles
Gupta, who is currently the CEO of Sports & Live Experiences at JioStar, will reportedly replace Geoff Allardice, who is currently serving a notice period as the ICC CEO.
Gupta, a seasoned media executive instrumental in elevating the Indian Premier League (IPL) to unprecedented viewership heights, is no stranger to cricket’s global stage.
His role at JioStar has seen record-breaking audiences with the 2025 Champions Trophy drawing over 540 crore views.
Sanoj Gupta’s Likely Challenges If He Becomes ICC CEO
A key challenge for him will be renegotiating JioStar’s broadcast agreement for ICC global events if India refuse to play Pakistan due to ongoing tensions.Â
Another pressing issue is reforming the World Test Championship. While the current structure will remain for the 2025-27 cycle, there is growing momentum to overhaul the competition for the next Future Tours Programme (FTP).
Gupta would also need to steer cricket through a congested global schedule. The IPL’s planned expansion from 74 to 94 matches by 2028 threatens international cricket’s prominence. Additionally, Gupta’s agenda would include expanding women’s cricket and overseeing the sport’s return to the Olympics in 2028, a milestone for global growth.
