India will battle it out with Australia for a three-match ODI series, starting on Sunday, October 19. Ahead of the pivotal series, all-rounder Axar Patel attended the pre-match conference, where he spoke at length about the recent leadership change in the ODI format. For the unversed, Shubman Gill has succeeded Rohit Sharma as the skipper in the 50-over format as the full-time leader.
The decision to thrust the young player in the captainship role received mixed reviews from experts and fans, with the majority being upset at the treatment meted out to Rohit. However, Axar expressed his thoughts about Gill being at the helm of things and stated that the 26-year-old can grow as captain under Rohit and Virat Kohli.

“That's a great example for Shubman. I think both Rohit and Virat are there. We are seeing the transition happening. And it’s good that the seniors are with the youngsters at this phase. The youngsters will know how to handle situations. The discussions in the dressing room are always about what to do and what not to do on the field,"Patel remarked when asked about Gill taking over the baton from Rohit.
It’s a perfect situation for Shubman Gill because he has both Rohit and Virat in the dressing room. For him to grow as a captain, this is a great opportunity. It’s a perfect mix of youngsters and seniors, and we will surely gel well,”he added.

Axar Patel selected ahead of Ravindra Jadeja for the World Cup
Notably, Axar has pipped all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the ODI team ahead of the World Cup in 2027. The latter is not part of the ODI side after performing exceptionally well in the Test series against England and the West Indies. Meanwhile, Axar's inclusion for the Australia series comes after his consistent showing in the ODI and T20 formats. However, the door is not yet shut on Jadeja, as he can be back in contention for the ODI format ahead of the showpiece event.
