The 44-year-old MS Dhoni is expected to play one more season for Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming IPL 2026, as reported by Rev Sportz. Dhoni was retained by CSK for ₹4 crores as an uncapped player. However, the previous season was CSK’s worst ever, as they finished at the bottom of the points table — a first in the tournament's history.
Dhoni’s Potential Return
Fresh reports have emerged around Dhoni’s potential return, as fans continue to ask the same question wherever he goes. Dhoni, however, has been clear — his decision will depend on the condition of his knee. According to Rev Sportz, Dhoni might return for one last season with CSK.
“It depends. I have four or five months to decide [whether to play or not]. It's professional cricket; you have to be at your best. It's not about performances. What's important is to see how much hunger you have. I have enough time to decide. I'll go back to Ranchi. I'm not saying I'm done; I'm not saying I'm coming back. I have the luxury of time,"

Dhoni’s return might also be influenced by the comeback of former BCCI chairman N. Srinivasan, who is back at the helm of CSK Private Limited. He will now oversee operations for CSK, JSK, and TSK. This iconic duo has ruled Indian cricket, from winning the 2011 World Cup to multiple IPL trophies.

CSK Face Tough Questions on Dhoni’s Role and Batting Firepower
Meanwhile, many believe Dhoni’s return is more about brand value than cricket. Fans still show up in massive numbers to watch ‘Thala’, but his batting impact has declined in recent years. Due to a knee injury, he hasn’t been able to run like he used to, and he usually walks in to bat during the final overs. That strategy faced backlash last season, especially with CSK’s batting lineup struggling to find form.

CSK will now be looking to strengthen their batting order in the upcoming mini-auction and may search for a long-term replacement for Dhoni after the Sanju Samson deal fell through. If Dhoni returns this season, fans expect him to be sharp behind the stumps — but also hope to see more firepower with the bat.
