Is Ravindra Jadeja Declining? Brad Haddin Questions His Test Future

Summary

Brad Haddin and Greg Chappell question Ravindra Jadeja’s role in Tests, suggest Kuldeep Yadav for England conditions ahead of 2nd Test in Birmingham.

Ravi jadeja

Former Australian wicket-keeper Brad Haddin questions Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s efficiency in Test cricket after his under-par display in the first Test against England at Headingley.

Ravindra Jadeja came under scrutiny after a below-par performance in the first Test against England, where he picked up only one wicket despite being economical in the first innings. His second-innings bowling drew criticism as he leaked runs at nearly 4.5 RPO.

All-rounder's performance was analyzed by former cricketer Dinesh Karthik, who noted that Jadeja bowled very straight instead of targeting the rough, especially on Day 5.

Brad Haddin Questions Jadeja’s Role, Backs Kuldeep for England Conditions

Now, former Australian batter Brad Haddin has questioned Jadeja’s effectiveness in English conditions:

"Are we seeing the decline of Ravindra Jadeja? I mean, yes, he is effective in Indian conditions, and how hard it is to play left-arm spin in India, but I don't think he is the best option to have in the team spin-wise."

Haddin also suggested including Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI, believing his attacking style could be more fruitful in England:

"I would look at Kuldeep. Someone who is an attacking spinner, who can get wickets. You’ve got a couple of hold-in bowlers. Siraj can play that role, but I think they need to be a bit more bold in their selection of bowlers," Haddin said (via Hindustan Times).

Greg Chappell Joins Criticism, Calls for Rethink on Jadeja’s Role in England

Additionally, former India coach Greg Chappell echoed similar sentiments in his ESPN column, suggesting Jadeja isn’t suited as a frontline spinner in England:

"Jadeja is not a front-line spinner in English conditions. If his batting is considered good enough, he can be a support spinner; otherwise, a rethink is necessary. If India are to reverse their fortunes in this series, then a better-balanced team is required," he wrote for ESPNcricinfo.

The second Test begins June 2 in Birmingham. Reports suggest Kuldeep Yadav may have to wait for a comeback, as India is unlikely to change their bowling combination, meaning Jadeja is expected to retain his place.
