Dewald Brevis, the South African batter, is back in the news after scoring a scintillating hundred against Australia in the ongoing T20I series between the two teams.

He became the youngest South African batter to score a T20I century as he scored 125 runs off just 56 balls in the second T20I and helped his team win the contest. His knock came on the back of his team’s loss in the first T20I.

Brevis scored his runs at a strike rate of over 220 as he decimated the Australian attack. Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin, whose future at CSK is unclear ahead of the next season, has recently spoken about how the franchise bagged the South African batter as an injury replacement.

Dewald Brevis Deal Happened Under The Table - R Ashwin

Dewald Brevis joined CSK after he replaced Gurjapneet Singh in the second half of the season, once he was ruled out due to injury. The IPL also came up with a statement on CSK bagging him in place of the injured pacer.

"Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South Africa's Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025... Brevis was previously part of Mumbai Indians (MI), where he played 10 matches. He will join CSK for INR 2.2 crore," a statement from IPL had said back in 2024.

Now, Ashwin, in his recent YouTube video, has spoken about how Chennai Super Kings bagged him by paying him more than what was his base price. He further said that the deal happened under the table, which is why not many know about it.

"I will tell you something. About Brevis. He had a great time last IPL with CSK. In fact, a few teams were talking to him. A few teams left him because of the price. When he was supposed to be signed as a replacement, he was supposed to be signed at the base price. But what happens is you talk to the agents and the player will say, if you give me X amount extra, I will come," R Ashwin said on his YouTube video.
"That happens because the player knows if he is released next season, he will go for good money. So his concept was that, you pay me good money now else I will go for more next year. And CSK were ready to pay him, hence he came. In the back half, the CSK combination was strong. They will go with Rs 30 crore in IPL 2026 mini auction," he added.

Brevis Likely To Be Retained By CSK Ahead Of Mini-Auction

Brevis was signed up by CSK on April 18, alongside Ayush Mhatre, as the team was looking to rejig their batting lineup. The move to sign the players reaped rewards for the franchise in the final few games of the season. Since they both were signed before the break in the tournament due to Operation Sindoor, CSK can retain both of them ahead of the next season.
