Rohit Sharma has had an very interesting an envious ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) season for Mumbai Indians (MI). The former MI captain in majority of the matches has come as an impact sub. While at first, many fans believed that due to the opening batter being an average fielder, MI wanted him to come only for few overs as impact sub. However, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardena has broken the silence on why the veteran MI player has been subbed out.

Ahead of MI's important match against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Tuesday, May 06, Jayawardena busted the myth of Rohit Sharma's presence only as the impact sub. As per the former Lankan player, the MI opener is carrying a slight niggle, and hence, he is used in the role of impact sub. According to Jayawardene, Rohit suffered from a niggle during the Champions Trophy event, and hence MI does want to aggravate his injury by his fielding, so the former MI captain has been used as an impact sub only.

The extent of Rohit Sharma's injury has not been revealed, but it is confirmed that the right-hand batter will play only as an impact sub.

Rohit Sharma back among runs for MI

Notably, MI was slightly worried about their veteran player's form in the first half of the IPL 2025 season. However, the 'Hitman proved form is temporary and class is permanent by scoring three fifties in the second half of the IPL 2025 season. Currently, the 37-year-old has scored 293 runs at a strike rate of 155.

Rohit's fiery starts upfront has propelled MI to huge scores, and has given bowlers plenty to defend. Currently, MI is third in the IPL 2025 points table with 14 points from 11 games.
