Shubman Gill’s recent heroics as India’s Test captain has given former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif confidence in the youngster. With the team in transition, he believes that Gill is ready to take over ODI captaincy from Rohit Sharma.
Gill drew his first Test assignment against England 2-2 and in the process has taken his team above England in the WTC 2025-27 points table. He scored 754 runs with the bat, which was the biggest highlight of the series.
Shubman Gill’s place in the Test team before this series was a question mark. However, with all those runs he scored, he has been able to put that controversy to bed. There have been talks about Gill succeeding Rohit as the next ODI skipper.

He Will Get ODI Captaincy - Mohammad Kaif On Shubman Gill
In his recent YouTube video, Mohammad Kaif has touched on that subject once again and has added fuel to the fire. Kaif praised Gill’s calmness under pressure in the Test series and was happy with how he managed himself as a batter and a captain.
"He was such a calm captain. He led with composure under pressure. He will get the ODI captaincy as well because we don't know how long Rohit Sharma will continue as captain. Gill is ready to take over. He scores in white-ball. He has performed well as captain here in Tests and led from the front. When you go with a young team, you have to do both things – score with the bat and do well as captain. A brilliant tour for him overall," Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
Gill’s 754-run series came on the back of four centuries, with his career-best score of 269 runs coming in the second Test at Edgbaston. He followed his double century in the first innings with a century in the second as he finished with 430 runs in the Test match, the most by any Indian batter in Test cricket.

Gill Broke Several Batting Records In England Test Series
Shubman Gill broke several other records with the bat during the Test series as well, scoring heavily against a tough opposition against England and that too in their own backyard.
“Shubman Gill, as captain, created opportunities with both hands in this series. When he became captain, there were many questions as to why he was made captain, looking at his Test record. A young captain reached England under a lot of pressure with a young team. He answered with his bat and it came to a point where he was compared to breaking Sir Don Bradman's record. Such a strong comeback with the bat,”Kaif concluded saying.
